Hotel 4C

Hotel 4C is a desert hotel that refuses to sit on the land and instead burrows into it. The complex cascades down a barren, rock-strewn hillside in a series of terraced concrete-and-stone pavilions, each one dug partially into the slope so that its green roof merges with the terrain above while its glass facade opens to the valley below. The guest rooms are stacked like geological strata — concrete slabs, timber-louver screens, and bands of floor-to-ceiling glass alternating in a horizontal rhythm that echoes the sedimentary layers of the hillside itself. At the summit, a lobby pavilion with a dramatic folded roof and a red accent wall serves as the single gesture of architectural assertion; everything else defers to the mountain. Pools are carved into the terraces between buildings, their organic, amoebic shapes softened by native plantings of yucca, nopal, and maguey. The hotel disappears into its site — not as camouflage, but as an act of geological empathy.
