Fresh
Cuauhtémoc, Mexico City · 2016
Fresh is a restaurant inserted into the shell of a magnificent Art Nouveau building — a facade of sinuous carved stone, whiplash moldings, and organic window surrounds that belongs to early-twentieth-century Mexico City at its most exuberant. The design challenge was to honor that extraordinary envelope while creating an interior that feels contemporary, warm, and entirely its own. The solution is a dialogue of eras: the ornamental plaster moldings and ceiling rosettes of the original rooms are retained and painted a clean white, while beneath them the designers introduce a new layer of reclaimed wide-plank oak floors, darkened wood banquettes, and hot-pink Eames shell chairs that pop against the neutral backdrop. The result is a space where the Beaux-Arts grandeur of the building and the relaxed energy of a modern cafe coexist without either one dominating — a conversation across a century, conducted in materials and color.
