Casa Mono

Casa Mono is a house built from the earth it stands on. Set high on a hillside overlooking the Pacific coast, the residence is constructed almost entirely of rammed earth — its walls rising in warm, stratified bands that record the compaction of local soil like geological time made visible. The material is left unfinished and unapologetic: formwork tie holes remain, strata shift in tone from terracotta to umber, and the surfaces age alongside the landscape rather than against it. Against this ancient construction method, the architects set a deliberately modern counterpoint — tall steel-framed glazing in a factory-grid pattern that floods the interior with light and dissolves the boundary between shelter and sky. The flat roofs step at varying heights to break the mass into a cluster of interconnected volumes, each one oriented to capture a different view of the valley and the distant ocean. It is a house that feels both primitive and precise, as though it has always been part of the hillside and was simply uncovered.
