Casa Breinard

Casa Breinard steps down a desert hillside in a series of interlocking terraces, each one roofed in living green. The house is conceived as landscape as much as building — planted rooftops cascade from level to level so that from above the structure nearly vanishes into the terrain, while from below the stacked volumes present a clean geometry of sand-colored stucco and horizontal timber-slat screens. Deep overhangs and shaded loggias mediate between the fierce desert sun and the cool, sheltered interior, and cactus gardens colonize every surface the architecture offers them. It is a house designed to be colonized by its site, where the boundary between garden and dwelling is perpetually, deliberately unclear.
