Atelier

Todos Santos, Baja California Sur · 2021

Atelier is a desert studio pared to its essence — a single open pavilion set among saguaros and creosote, where the act of making is given the same dignity as the landscape that surrounds it. The structure is little more than a deep roof of timber slats held aloft on slender columns, its shadows casting a shifting barcode of light across the concrete floor below. Walls appear only where enclosure is strictly necessary; everywhere else, the building opens to the desert sky through clerestory glazing and slatted screens that filter the Sonoran light into something workable. The palette is monastic: sand-toned stucco, raw timber, polished concrete, and the grey-green of the native plantings that push right up to the building's edge. It is architecture that refuses to compete with the desert and in that refusal becomes inseparable from it.
